As I sit here pondering the fate of the Crestwood Courts' project, and any project in the short term future,
I am beginning to wonder what this Holiday season will mean for our business, as well as Crestwood as a whole. There can be no doubt that the new owners of the Crestwood Court's project are trying very hard to secure the needed financing to move ahead with the project.
That said, where is it to come from? The normal sources of funding (AIG, unions, major banks) are themselves being "bailed out" by the Government, and it would appear this will not end for some time now!
In my own field, I have seen major customers have to cancel projected projects on the boards, and table others for "future construction" until the business climate improves.
What does all this have to do with Crestwood you ask? Darn good question my friends! Our fair City and our retail community need our help now more than ever! There is much we must do to cut expenses, and now rather than borrow from the surplus for the 2009 budget. This will not be easy, or a good thing, but it will be necessary.
Our retailers, and other business who are the very lifeblood of our tax system must have ALL OF US back them 100%! I am asking all of us to buy from our business first, if you nee a plug, go to Ace Hardware, whatever you need is right here, so why shop elsewhere?
We soon will all be out doing our Christmas shopping, again SHOP IN CRESTWOOD ONLY! The prices are no different than Kirkwood, or Sunset Hills, and you won't be spending vital funds on gasoline for the extra miles.
We all have stories about a Crestwood business going the extra mile for us, now it's our turn. I for one will not be spending a farthing on materials or gifts this season outside of Crestwood, and I urge you to please do the same!

Tom, are we allowed to shop at Kohls? Let me know. Thanks.
Tom,
Your concerns are well stated but what can we do to increase revenue in our city? It seems to me that revenues and especially sales taxes support our city at a time when these revenue sources are decreasing and there are no avenues for more revenue just cuts in expenses to balance the scale. We cannot continue this practice.
It is similar to our personal lives in that if you have a nestegg that you continue to tap to make ends meet, it isn't long before your nestegg is depleted and you can't pay your bills. Where does the money come from?
1. There are additional cuts to be made - Sappington House, Animal Control officer, fleet reduction, just to name a few.
2. Every department should be audited. New budgeting practices should be put in place.
3. Confidence in this city's leadership is weak at best. Prop 1 went down by 70+ per cent. I'd be hesitant to grant this administration any more money. They do not have my confidence.
A) Once cuts are made and the city is running efficiently, and B) once confidence is restored in city leadership, citizens may dig deeper in their pockets. If the economy recovers and sales picks up, that would be beneficial too (obviously). But until the city shows the willingness to run the city efficiently and until confidence is restored in its leadership, we have a problem.
9:34 PM blogger: Indeed you should shop at Kohl's, and while your there why not give a few extra Penney's to them to retire the TDD tax sooner, as the cost of chlorine will surely take a jump next year!
By the way, I see we have new trees, flowers, and retaining walls now. Since they were paid for by a Transportation district Tax, does that mean I can drive on them? Just wondering?
4:31 PM Blogger: It was just announced on KMOX that the Crestwood Courts are having a meeting tonite to invite the art's and artisans to use up to 30 store fronts. I didn't hear if they will be charged rent though.
All we can do at this point is shop with our retailers as I said. Unless and until the National economic mess straightens out, don't look for new businesses to open in the near future.
Shop Crestwood, period, they need us, and we need them!
