Ms. Karen Rainey presents a "new" idea for an email exchange (click here for audio.)

While on the surface this seems like a great idea, some questions have been raised in my mind.

No one in the City responsible for the use of the gathered addresses.

No formal content approval process.

No written content guidelines.

No written guidelines regarding email responses.

Process is not approved by BOA but the email access has been granted to a non city employee.

The use of City email account's by ANYONE not directly accountable to the City opens the City up to needless liability.

Now,while I do not expect that Ms. Rainey's actions will be anything but honorable in this endeavor, I worry about the use of a City email address BY ANYONE other than a City employee. There are certain uses for those addresses that are prohibited, such as "data mining" where the addresses are used for a political candidate to send out campaign literature, or requests for donations.

As I said this is a good idea, and I thank her for the time and effort, but that said, there must be "checks and balances' in place for ANY use of the City email account. I ask the BOA to make completely certain that a review by the City is in place for each and every use of that address, or failing that, I suggest that a separate site be set up, absent City involvemt.

An alternative approach to handling this would be to establish an RSS Feed of this served-up content on the city website. This certainly addresses any of the privacy concerns as there are no e-mail list maintenance issues. Subscribers can merely opt-in or opt-out as they deem necessary, without the city's knowledge.

11:46 AM blogger: Excellent idea, this would remove all doubt, and get the job done as well.

Will the Mayor be able to censor the emails in any way or form?

Of course the mayor can, will and does monitor emails. The mayor has stated numerous times he runs the city.

MERRY CHRISTMAS

7:25 AM blogger: The Mayor or anyone else should not censure emails because there should be NO PRIVATE emails coming from the City!

If this is granted then EVERYONE in town may have one for the asking! To do this the right way, we need an RSS feed on the site.
